A Photowalk through Tallinn on a snowy night.
Until about a few years ago, a camera was my constant companion. It was a tool for documenting life, finding beauty in the day-to-day, and, at times, even a reason to get out of the house. But it’s been sliding out of sight for a few years now, finding its way to the back of the cupboard, where it is conveniently forgotten.
But this year, when I took it out for the yearly Christmas photo, it stuck around for a little longer. So, after all the Christmas festivities, laying around, and digesting, I decided to take it out for a spin.
This time, after many years, we had a black Christmas here in Estonia. But, with the coming of 2025, the snow returned. It was a little at first, in the form of sleet, sometimes even sputters of hail, but then the skies opened, and it came down in bucketfuls, inundating the city as it fell through the night and into the late afternoon. Following this, we stepped out to see snow-covered Tallinn. I took the Canon 6D with a 50mm 1.4 on it. Given the low light, I wasn’t sure I would get anything, but the snow helped by reflecting the light up and around. The snow continued to fall as the temperature dipped further. We walked through the old neighborhood of Kalamaja (transl: Fish House) to the old city walls and circled Tallinn’s old town.
